My 5-day Fast (Day 4)

Day 4 started out near-euphoric but then got harder as the hours wore on.

 

Day 4:

Weight: 163.4 pounds (5.2 pounds down from Day 1: 168.6)

Sleep: +/- 7 hours

No nap yesterday helped me fall asleep quickly last night. I slept more soundly than previous nights of the fast, though I woke up early with another headache. After a bio break and some plain water I was able to get back to sleep. Aiming to be in bed by 8:30PM tonight.

Intake:

  • 1.5 cup Cinnamon Tea
  • 40 ounces pure water
  • 10 ounces electrolyte water (Snake Juice)
  • 1.5 cup bone broth with approx. 1 tsp coconut oil and high vitamin butter oil, 1/2 tsp of lemon juice, ACV and sriracha, 1 tbsp heavy cream, pink salt to taste

Physical:

I started the day feeling very energetic and with no headache or other issues to speak of. I’ve been pushing myself pretty hard with my 80-Day Obsession work-outs and today was no exception. Right after my work-out, however, I started getting snappy. That should have been a clue that I needed more electrolytes, but I stuck to plain water. I did m hot/cold shower plus fascia blasting on face, neck, shoulders and upper arms. Afterward, I still had several hours of writing work to do so I put on some focus music, gave the five-year old (Iris) her allotted screen time and got to work. I sipped on cinnamon tea throughout and it went well.

Mid-afternoon I started belching and had terrible heartburn that lasted for several hours. I can only attribute it to the cinnamon tea as there was nothing else in my stomach. Iris and I also went out to visited both my grandma and my mom, and by the end of those few hours, I was absolutely spent. Early evening, I noticed crankiness and uncomfortable feelings of lethargy setting in. I laid down to rest for a while, but wanting to feel better I got up and made a bowl of bone broth for my dinner so I could sit with the family. Perhaps I should have forced some more Snake Juice down my gullet.

Nitty Gritty: My cycle started last night, two days early. I am typically crampy on the first day, but I haven’t experienced any PMS symptoms other than moodiness, and that may be due to detox. There’s no way to know for sure. I’m planning another five-day fast next week so I should be able to compare the differences while on my period vs. not.

Emotional: Other than crankiness, which in truth is more mental, my emotions have been pretty steady today. The morning energy high was lovely; I felt so wonderful, optimistic and happy. I’m sure that if I could push on to 7, 10 or even 20 days (which I will at a later date) I would experience the fasting euphoria so many speak of. As it happens, my man and I are going away for a very rare solo weekend and I’m not willing to fast or even diet when we do so. Without any guilt, I might have popcorn when we see Black Panther in 3D, late night pizza in our hotel room, Thai food for Saturday lunch, and a beautiful steak dinner on Saturday night. The wonderful thing about fasting is that I can get right back into it when our weekend away is over and undo any damage very quickly. I am curious to see how much weight I gain back over the indulgent weekend.

Mental: I’m still determined to make it to Day 5, but I’m planning my re-feed carefully and with excitement. I’ll start with broth tomorrow afternoon, a Shakeology smoothie on our drive to Winnipeg and then, hopefully, my stomach will be ready for whatever we want next. Fried eggs and cheese were looking very good today but I held strong.

Spiritual: Perhaps I’ve been cranky in part today because I took very little time for myself yesterday and today. I didn’t give myself any quiet time, reading time or meditation time today, owing to work and errands. But perhaps before bed, I’ll get in some stretching and deep breathing.

Overall: I’ve passed my previous fasting records and am doing fine despite the minor moodiness, heartburn and lethargy. My electrolyte intake and overall liquid intake probably aren’t where they should be, so I’ll have to make a better effort tomorrow and next week when I go for another 5-day. I’m glad I proved to myself that I can go without food for more than two days. That said, I’m looking forward to eating and am going to enjoy every bite this weekend.

One more day to go. Five more days coming up next week. I can do this!
